Bryan Marchment, the longtime NHL defenceman and former Toronto Maple Leaf, died at the age of 53 on Wednesday.

Agent Rick Curran confirmed Marchment’s death to The Associated Press. Marchment was attending the NHL draft in Montreal as a scout for San Jose Sharks.

A cause of death was not immediately available.

A former 1st round draft pick in 1987 (16th overall), Marchment played parts of 17 NHL seasons from 1989-2006 with Winnipeg, Chicago, Hartford, Edmonton, Tampa Bay, San Jose, Colorado, Toronto and Calgary.

Marchment signed with the Maple Leafs in 2003 and played one season in Toronto. In 75 games, Marchment had a goal, three points, and 106 penalty minutes.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bryan Marchment,” the Maple Leafs said in a statement published on Twitter.

“A Scarborough native, Bryan spent 19 seasons in the NHL, including one with his hometown Leafs in ’03-’04. He was beloved in our hockey community by all that knew him. Our hearts go out to his entire family.”

Marchment had been working in scouting and other roles for the Sharks and their American Hockey League affiliate since 2007.

Marchment’s son, Mason, spent several seasons with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. He made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs in 2019-2020, appearing in four games.

Mason was traded to Florida for Denis Malgin in 2020. It’s with the Panthers did the bruising left winger find his game, coming off a breakout season in which he scored 18 goals and finished with 47 points in 54 games.

He’s currently a free agent.
