McPhillips underpass at Logan Avenue completely flooded

The license plates of two vehicles submerged and stalled at Winnipeg’s McPhillips underpass were barely visible as flood water rose rapidly.

The accumulation of rain forced two drivers to ditch their vehicles at McPhillips and Logan Avenue as southern Manitoba was hit with more rain Monday into Tuesday.

The underpass was officially closed due to flooding early Tuesday morning.

Winnipeg Transit rerouted buses as a result. Routes 30, 33, 34, 35 and 36 were affected.

The water level receded slightly down to the vehicles’ tires by late Tuesday morning.

The rising water levels on lakes, streams and drains continue to threaten low-lying areas like roads, homes and other infrastructure.

A powerful Colorado low tracking into the province brought more rain and is expected to bring heavy winds on Tuesday.

Environment Canada predicts a band of showers and thunderstorms will move in from the south over the next few days.

The province has been walloped by wet weather for weeks. It’s brought significant flooding, damage and evacuations in some areas.

There are currently 32 local states of emergency, the province said.
