Royal watcher hopes Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be respectful of queen in Oprah interview

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Royal watchers — and haters — are getting ready for Sunday night, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex break their silence during a highly-anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Monarchist League of Canada hopes the couple remains respectful to the Queen.

“I think any attempt by anyone around the world to besmirch the queen and the work that she has done is a fool’s errand,” said Keith Roy with the Monarchist League of Canada.

He thinks the interview is an attempt by the couple to play the media in their favour, which may be a fruitless endeavor.

“Other celebrities and individuals have tried to beat the media before, and that’s unlikely to occur,” he said.

Roy adds it’s hard to speculate further until the interview airs, but he hopes it will provide more insight into a family that has “given a life of service.”

On Friday, CBS released new clips from the interview. In it, Winfrey asks Meghan Markle what’s changed between 2018 when she declined an interview request and today.

“That we’re on the other side of a lot of life experience that’s happened. Also, that we have the ability to make our own choices,” Markle responds.

“It’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege, in some ways, to be able to say ‘Yes, I’m ready to talk,'” she adds.

Earlier this week, CBC released other snippets from the interview.

“I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silence if there is an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” she said.

“There’s a lot that’s been lost already,” she added.

Roy says besides the sensationalist clips meant to promote the interview, it’s hard to speculate what will be revealed.

“They mind themselves a little behind the 8-ball on this. But people are free to talk. It’s certainly going to be an interesting interview, no matter what side of the issue you sit on. And it’s put together by Oprah, so that’s going to be an amazing production.

The couple has been living in California with son Archie since steeping away from royal duties a year ago. They are expecting their second child.
