Tim Hortons ditches ‘rim,’ goes fully digital with ‘Roll Up to Win’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You will no longer have to “roll up the rim to win,” as Tim Hortons makes changes to one of the most recognized contests in the country.

There will be no more fiddling with your thumbs or using your teeth on the rim of a Tim’s coffee cup. The company is officially getting rid of printed messages under the rolled up coffee cup rims, moving to a scan of your loyalty card or on the Tim’s app to reflect the change.

Tim Hortons has changed the name of its annual spring contest to simply “Roll Up to Win,’ ditching the rim component.

The scanning of the Tim’s app on phones was tested last year when the company has had to adapt the contest to pandemic restrictions. The company said in light of COVID-19 it wasn’t okay for staff to handle the tabs which may have been in people’s mouths.

The move also helps with Tim’s push to reduce waste. The coffee cups were, in some cases, unused other than for the contest.

Customers can earn digital “Rolls” through eligible purchases

The contest begins March 8 and runs through April 4.
