2 facing charges for flooding that impacted Winnipeg police headquarters

51-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman have been arrested following the flooding that happened at the Winnipeg police headquarters last evening. Francisca Oppong reports.

Winnipeg police say two people are facing mischief charges after a flooding incident on Saturday that partially impacted the Winnipeg police headquarters.

WPS says the incident happened around 6 p.m. in the tower along Graham Avenue.

Initially, police believed that the flooding was due to a watermain break or the bursting of upper-level pipes; however, after an investigation, officers determined that two people had allegedly opened several emergency water supply valves in the upper stairwells of the adjoining tower building.

“Within minutes, significant water pressure built up in the pipes and forced water into the stairwells of the tower, which flooded some areas of police headquarters. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service attended and secured the compromised valves. Unfortunately, the release of water caused extensive flooding damage. The extent of the damage is being assessed and will take time to fully evaluate,” said WPS in a statement.

The two people who were believed to be involved were identified and located nearby and taken into custody around 11 p.m.

Police say a 51-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman are both facing charges of mischief over $5,000 and have been released on Undertakings.

Police say the extent of the damage from the flooding is still being assessed; however, uniform operations will not be impacted.
