Liverpool clinches Premier League title, ending 30 year drought

LONDON (CityNews) – Liverpool FC have been crowned champions of England’s Premier League.

The title gives Liverpool their first Premier League title since the 1989-90 league season, when the club beat Aston Villa in the title race.

Jürgen Klopp’s side received a little help from rival, Chelsea FC, to secure the title. Making the second time in four years that Chelsea has helped another team secure the Premier League title, helping Leicester City to win their first title in 2016.

The Premier League title was a two team race after the league rest following a three month break due to the coronavirus, with Liverpool needing six points to secure the title.

Chelsea’s 2-1 dramatic victory over Manchester City, which saw a late red card given to City’s Fernandinho for stopping the ball on the goal line with his hand, gave Liverpool the title with seven games to spare in their season. The earliest a Premier League title has awarded.

Not only are they the earliest Premier League winners, the club have also become the latest as the league usually ends mid-May.

The record breaking season for the Reds could see the club shatter records like most wins in a season (32), most home wins (18), most away wins (16), and biggest winning margin (19 points).

While the Reds went 30 years without a Premier League title, the team didn’t go emptyhanded in that span. They won three FA Cups, four League Cups, a UEFA Europa League title, and a pair of Champions League titles, including last season’s thrilling run ending in a victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool now sits one title shy of rival Manchester United for the most in England’s top flight of football. The Red Devils took the honor of having the most titles away from Liverpool in 2011, and currently have 20.

Liverpool will host Manchester City at Anfield in their next match on July 2nd. A bittersweet match for Liverpool and their fans as the club will hoist the title against the team that narrowly beat them last season.

More to come.
