19-year-old facing multitude of charges following police pursuit

WINNIPEG (CITYNEWS) – A dramatic scene last week ended with a young man in custody and he’s now facing nearly a dozen charges.

Winnipeg police say shortly before four Thursday morning, the AIR1 helicopter was patrolling the Whittier Park area and noticed a suspicious vehicle stuck in the snow near the baseball diamond. When the driver managed to get the car free, the AIR1 team began to track it.

The car turned out to matched the description of a Toyota Corolla that was stolen a week prior. A patrol unit attempted a traffic stop but the driver sped off. Officers then used a stop stick to deflate the car’s tires as it drove through the Main Street and Higgins Ave area.

The car eventually slowed to a stop as its tires lost air and ended up stuck near Cumberland Ave and Kennedy Street. The suspect driver continued to try to drive the car away but was eventually removed from the vehicle by officers and the K9 unit.

Inside the vehicle, officers found an 18-inch machete, break-in tools, a .270 Winchester ammunition cartridge and a small amount of methamphetamine. Investigators say the 19-year-old driver had been involved in a home invasion the afternoon before in the Spence neighbourhood. Two people were injured in the break-in, and officers say the investigation into that incident is ongoing.

Since then, WPS has charged Joseph Peter Hunter with:

– Theft of Motor Vehicle
– Possession of Scheduled Substance – Methamphetamine
– Possession of a Weapon
– Possession of Break-In Instrument(s)
– Fail to Comply with Probation Order
– Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
– Aggravated Assault
– Assault Cause Bodily Harm
– Break Enter & Commit – Dwelling House

Hinter was also processed on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with his probation order. He remains in custody.
