WINNIPEG – Winnipeggers are deciding today whether the city’s iconic Portage and Main intersection should be reopened to pedestrians.
It’s municipal election day in Manitoba and in Winnipeg, a referendum in conjunction with the vote asks whether concrete barriers that prevent people from crossing the intersection should be removed.
Those barriers have been in place since 1979 under terms of a development agreement with the private sector.
The crossing issue has dominated much of this year’s election campaign, with some groups arguing that access should be allowed to help revitalize the downtown.
