Police lay charges in two separate homicides

WINNIPEG – Police have laid charges in two homicide cases from earlier this year.
Late in the evening on Aug. 30, crews responded to a home on Idlewild Bay and Jefferson Ave for a little boy who was unconscious. The 21-month-old child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The Child Abuse Unit launched an investigation following the boy’s death, which lead officers to believe this was not the first time the child had been injured. Investigators have now charged Allen Joseph Frier Beardy, 22, with manslaughter.
“Blunt force trauma injuries were discovered on the child’s upper body,” explained officer Jay Murray. “It is believed the child was injured by Beardy on two different occasions on August 30th, once at a residence in the 300 block of Redwood Avenue and once at the residence on Idlewild Bay.”
Beardy, who is the boyfriend of the boy’s mother, remains in police custody. Murray said this was a tough investigation and the death of a child weighs heavily on everyone involved, but he wouldn’t comment on if officers had any previous run-ins with Beardy or the boy’s family.
As for why it took so long for charges, Murray said emotions of protective parents can create an added level of difficulty in child abuse investigations.
Boy charged in stabbing death of 17-year-old
Charges have also been laid in a murder that happened on Sept. 24.
First responders rushed a 17-year-old boy to the hospital after he was assaulted in the railway underpass on McPhillips Street near Logan Avenue.
“This homicide happened just outside a construction zone. There were a number of construction workers that contacted police and actually provided medical attention to this young man. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to save his life.”
The teenager died in hospital. Investigators in the case believe he was involved in a fight with another boy and was stabbed during the altercation. Four days later, officers located the suspect–a 13-year-old boy–who has now been charged with second-degree murder.
Murray said the victim and attacker knew each other, but what their exact relationship is unknown.
“It was not random.”
The suspect is known to police and he remains in custody.
