Winnipeg security guard, 22, stabbed by suspected shoplifter at Dollarama on Portage Avenue

Winnipeg police say a 22-year-old security guard was stabbed in the upper body while confronting a suspected shoplifter on Tuesday afternoon.
The Winnipeg Police Service says it happened at a store on Portage Avenue around 4 p.m. CityNews has learned it was at the Dollarama at the Courts of St. James.
Authorities say a man entered the store and was confronted by the guard about possible shoplifting.
“When the security guard directed the male to leave, he produced a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed the guard in the upper body,” police said in a news release. “The suspect fled with stolen merchandise.”
The security guard, whom CityNews has learned worked for Impact Security, was seriously injured and taken to hospital in unstable condition. He was later upgraded to stable.
Police have not arrested a suspect. The WPS major crimes unit is investigating.
Dollarama told CityNews it is aware of the incident.
“We are cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation,” said Lyla Radmanovich, the company’s media relations specialist. “The safety and well-being of our employees, customers and business partners is a priority. As this is an active police investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
