Inquest called into woman’s death after she was struck by Winnipeg police cruiser in encampment

An inquest has been called into the death of a 39-year-old woman who was hit by a police vehicle driving through an encampment in a park nearly two years ago.
Tammy Bateman died after being struck by the Winnipeg Police Service cruiser in Fort Rouge Park on Sept. 2, 2024.

Officers were driving a resident back to the encampment along the riverbank shortly before 9:30 p.m. when it happened. Bateman had been lying down on a gravel road.
She was taken to the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition, where she died of her injuries.
After investigating, Manitoba’s police watchdog did not recommend charges against the officers, determining it was an “unfortunate accident” and not a criminal offence.

The inquest called by chief medical examiner Dr. John K. Younes will determine the circumstances related to her death, and if anything can be done to prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.
The inquest into Bateman’s death is one of six inquests called by Manitoba’s chief medical examiner on Thursday.
