Winnipeg suspect arrested with hatchet after vehicle stolen during break-in: police

A break-in and vehicle theft has left a Winnipeg couple on edge.
Maor Tsitrin and Olivia Loewen say they had just finished gardening and were cleaning things up at their home on Boston Avenue on Monday evening.
The couple tells CityNews Loewen went upstairs to take a shower while Tsitrin was downstairs getting a ladder. He exited from the rear entrance and says he was out for only five minutes.
“In that time, I guess the person that broke into the home, he came on a bike and I guess he saw that I left the back door open, even though I was just down there for a couple minutes,” Tsitrin recounted.
Tsitrin says the suspect then entered their home and took the keys that were on the counter next to the entrance.
“I heard the car turned on from downstairs,” he said. “I thought it was weird cause she said she was gonna be getting into the shower. So, I quickly walked upstairs and saw that the car started backing up, so I was looking at the car and as it drove past me backwards, I saw that she was not in the vehicle. It was some random guy, and he just quickly sped off. I tried to take a video, then I quickly called 911.”
The Winnipeg Police Service’s rapid response unit was patrolling near Tache Avenue and Provencher Boulevard and spotted the stolen Kia Forte parked under the train bridge. Officers took the suspect into custody and say they found a weapon on the front seat during the arrest.
“Finding out later that he had come in with a hatchet was a little bit, very scary,” Loewen said. “So that added a whole other level of, ‘oh my goodness.’ Thank goodness I was upstairs.”
The couple is glad no one was hurt, and that neither of them met the suspect face to face.
“I guess the crappiest part is knowing that he might be out again while he’s waiting for his trial,” Tsitrin said. “It was such a quick moment, the whole thing happened in less than like four or five minutes.
“And I don’t really think it was a premeditated thing. I think he just saw an opportunity. Maybe he was biking down the back lane and saw the door was open and decided to go for it. So it’s just like, something like that can happen so quickly, it’s just on someone’s impulse.”
Deshawn Joseph Colomb, 21, has been charged with breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
