Central Park apartment complex fire leaves 1 dead

Winnipeg police say one person was found dead inside a suite of a high-rise apartment complex that caught fire in the city’s Central Park neighbourhood on Monday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it has no more information to share on the victim.

Firefighters were already on the scene battling the blaze on Kennedy Street near Sargent Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when police arrived.

“Because high-rise structures present added life-safety risks, dispatchers immediately upgraded the call to a second alarm and deployed additional crews to the scene,” the WFPS said in a news release.

Firefighters attacked the fire while others searched the building.

Residents of the building were evacuated. A bus was provided for temporary shelter for residents who were displaced. The City of Winnipeg responded to the scene to provide temporary support.

“Many of the building’s residents were able to return to their suites. However, smoke, water, and fire damage prevented some residents from immediately returning,” the WFPS explained.
