A Manitoba RCMP constable is facing charges after a suspect allegedly sustained an injury during an arrest in Portage la Prairie in July of last year.
The Independent Investigation Unit says the officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following the conclusion of its investigation.
On July 21, 2024, officers responded to a shoplifting call at a business in Portage la Prairie. Police say a suspect on a bicycle was later apprehended and taken into custody.
While in custody, Manitoba’s police watchdog says the man complained of having difficulty breathing and chest pains. He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a punctured lung.
The IIU was mandated to investigate given the man’s injury.
