Manitoba RCMP say two people are dead following separate drownings on Aug. 2.

Mounties say the first drowning happened around 2 p.m. when they responded to a report of a possible drowning at Reynolds Ponds in the RM of Reynolds.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that a man had been seen swimming, but hadn’t resurfaced. Bystanders tried looking for him before police arrived, but were unsuccessful.

An underwater recovery unit assisted with the search and were able to find the man already dead. RCMP did confirm the man was in his 70s from Ontario.

The second drowning happened around 8 p.m. when Mounties responded to a report of a possible drowning at Grand Beach.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that two men had gone onto the lake on a pool floatation device, lost their balance, and fell into the water.

One of the men was rescued by a nearby kayaker; however, the other did not resurface.

An underwater recovery unit assisted with the search and were able to find the man already dead. RCMP confirmed the man was 25-years-old from Winnipeg.

An investigation into both drownings is ongoing.
