Underground work completed, drivers to expect delays due to Portage and Main construction

The next phase of construction on one of Canada’s most known intersections is set to begin this week.

The City of Winnipeg pre-construction traffic signals will begin to be installed at Portage & Main during the week after underground work ended last week.

Drivers can expect delays at the intersection as long-term lane closures will begin on Dec. 4, and are expected to be in place for around six months.

The city also says while working to return pedestrian traffic to the intersection, work will also be done to remove the existing pedestrian barricades and there will be some sewer repairs.

Starting this week, drivers can expect to see a continued closure of the northbound curb lane at Portage Avenue and a new closure of the southbound curb lane between Portage Avenue and Pioneer Avenue, both of which are along Main Street.

Additionally, along Portage Avenue, the eastbound curb lane between Fort Street and Main Street will be closed.

The city also says the eastbound curb lane between Main Street and Westbrook Street along Portage Avenue East will continue to be closed and a no-right-turn restriction is being put in place from northbound Main Street onto Portage Avenue East, adding to the already existing left-turn restriction from southbound Main Street onto Portage Avenue East.

Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes to avoid Portage & Main during the construction. The city will be posting updates on lane closures on their website.
