Police looking for man after break-in, assault at University of Manitoba student residence

Winnipeg Police are looking for a man following a break-and-enter and assault that took place at a student housing complex at the University of Manitoba Friday morning.

The WPS says officers responded to a report of a break-in around 4:45 a.m. on the University campus along Dafoe Road.

After arriving at the scene, officers met with a woman who reported that while she was in her suite, someone broke in and physically assaulted her. She was able to fight off her attacker and called for help.

University security was alerted to the situation and contacted the police.

“She was shouting for help, so I think some calls were made,” Constable Dani McKinnon, Public Information Officer at Winnipeg Police Service.

“Anytime somebody breaks into a home, or a residence, or an apartment suite, late hours, female victim, and a serious assault takes place, this would be very fitting for the sex crimes to investigate.”

The woman was treated for injuries sustained during the incident and is in stable condition.

Police have released images of the suspect that were captured on security cameras.

The man has been described as 5’10” to 6’0″, with long hair and unkempt facial hair. At the time, he was wearing a black toque, black jacket with a grey hoodie, blue jeans, and black shoes. He also had a black and blue backpack.

Police say this is not something that occurs regularly and described it as a random occurrence, but warn students and residents living in the area to take precaution.

“If you’re in those residences to please lock your doors, make sure you have your cell phone with you, be aware of your surroundings especially in the darkness hours,” said McKinnon.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
