Cat owners in Winnipeg remain on edge, after the body of yet another slain feline was discovered in the city’s west-end this week, as police continue to investigate who is preying on these innocent animals.

These were the scenes Thursday, as police joined animal services to investigate after a dead cat was found on Simcoe Avenue.

Police calling the death ‘suspicious in nature’.

“It’s not just vehicles and coyotes that are dangers out there,” said Krista Blahut who discovered remains of murdered cats. “There are people especially in this area that are actively hunting cats.”

The latest death comes amidst a disturbing rise in dead cats turning up in the city, particularly in the Point Douglas area.

Earlier this week, Blahut guided us through Pritchard Park where she found five cats along the river, either mutilated or dismembered. She also had vets confirming the injuries are inconsistent with an animal attack.

“These ones are intentionally done by at least one person,” she said. “And I have had vets confirm this.”

Police have confirmed they are investigating the matter, but until the perpetrator is caught Blahut is urging cat owners across the city to remain vigilant.

“If you live in the Point Douglas area, need to keep your cats inside,” she said. “And if you see friendly cats in the area bring them inside and call the humane society to figure out who they belong to.”

“Cause any friendly cat right now,” she added. “Is vulnerable.”
