15-year-old arrested after unprovoked North End double stabbing: WPS

By News Staff

Police allege a 15-year-old boy stabbed a man and a woman without provocation in Winnipeg’s North End on Friday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the teenager, who was not known to police, did not know the two victims.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and detained in custody.

The WPS says a 50-year-old man was walking on King Street near Sutherland Avenue around 10:15 a.m. when he was approached by a male and stabbed in the upper body. The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition, police say, while the victim fled.

Minutes later and a few blocks away, police say a 27-year-old woman was approached by the same suspect on a back lane of Main Street and stabbed repeatedly in the upper and lower body. She was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

“We find this matter very concerning,” said Cst. Pat Saydak at a press conference. “I can’t speak to the specifics on what was going through (the suspect’s) mind or what possible mental-health issues he may have. Very happy to have made an arrest.”
