Police allege a Winnipeg man was impaired when he drove his vehicle onto a sidewalk before coming to a stop at the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters.
Police say it happened Saturday around 2:20 p.m., when a Ford Ranger was allegedly driven onto the east sidewalk of Smith Street and stopped under the HQ’s public entrance overhang.
Winnipeg police say they closed Smith Street and Graham Avenue “to establish a safe perimeter to ensure the public’s safety.”
The man refused to exit the vehicle and he brandished a screwdriver, police say,
Officers with the Tactical Support Team (TST) allegedly broke the vehicle’s windows and tasered the man “to safely extract the uncooperative male from the vehicle and safely place him under arrest.”
He was taken to hospital in stable condition and later cleared.
A 48-year-old man is facing a charge of operating a conveyance while impaired to any degree by BAC or drugs or both. He was also arrested on the strength of an outstanding unendorsed warrant, and detained in custody.
