Winnipeg police say an officer was injured after the arrest of two suspects Friday night in the Polo Park area, during which a weapon and drugs were allegedly seized.
Police say officers were responding to an unrelated call around 8:15 p.m. when they were alerted to an armed man at a business on St. Matthews Avenue near Empress Street.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the suspect “immediately ran from officers” once located.
WPS says the officers caught up to him and attempted to place him under arrest, but he became “combative and produced a handgun.”
“Officers were able to gain control and safely place the male under arrest,” police said in a release. “An adult female (known to the male) physically attempted to stop officers from making the arrest. She was also arrested by officers and taken into custody.”
Police allege one of the officers sustained an upper-body injury during the incident. They received medical treatment in hospital.
Police say they seized a Springfield Armory .45 calibre handgun, a magazine containing ammunition, about seven grams of cocaine, packaging materials, about $1,500 and a cell phone.
A 26-year-old Winnipeg man is facing multiple charges, including carrying a concealed weapon prohibited device or ammunition and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
He was detained in police custody.
A 23-year-old Winnipeg woman was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and obstructing a peace officer.
She was released with an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
