Driver fled police traffic stop, killed after crashing into building: WPS

A 27-year-old was killed after he crashed into a building in the city’s North End Saturday night, shortly after failing to stop for police.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the interaction began around 9:10 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Selkirk Avenue and McKenzie Street.

Police say the vehicle’s insurance was not valid.

The driver of the car ignored the traffic stop and fled police, according to a WPS release. Officers did not pursue.

The vehicle was located a few blocks away after the driver crashed into a building on Selkirk Avenue near Andrews Street.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

The Winnipeg police’s traffic division is investigating.
