1 dead, 2 in hospital following collision on Highway 8 north of Winnipeg

Manitoba RCMP say a 22-year-old is dead, and two other people are in hospital following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 8 Thursday evening.

Around 6:45 p.m., a Mountie who was driving north along Highway 8 near Riverton reportedly noticed a two-vehicle collision.

It is believed that one of the vehicles in the collision allegedly passed the officer at high speed when it collided with an SUV that was turning west on Provincial Road 329 from Highway 8.

The officer was able to immediately provide first aid and requested EMS, firefighters and additional officers.

The driver of the vehicle — an 18-year-old man from Arborg — was taken to hospital by STARS with serious life-threatening injuries, and remains there in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV — a 22-year-old man from Arborg — was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger — a 21-year-old woman from Arborg — was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
