Zebra mussels have been found in two more Manitoba lakes.
The province says the larvae of the invasive species were found in Lake Winnipegosis and Waterhen Lake in late August.
To prevent their spread, all watercraft and water-related equipment exiting those two lakes must be decontaminated prior to entering another body of water.
“These positive samples are a reminder of the importance to remain vigilant against the spread of AIS (aquatic invasive species). All water users play a critical role in protecting Manitoba’s waterbodies from the introduction and spread of AIS,” reads a news release from the province.
Manitoba Environment and Climate Change has activated its early detection rapid response plan. Additional monitoring will be conducted over the coming weeks to determine the extent of the invasions, the province says.
Zebra mussels can cause ecological damage and harm water treatment infrastructure.
