Manitoba records net increase of 196 doctors in past year

Manitoba has seen an increase in physicians for the third consecutive year, according to a doctors’ advocacy group in the province.

Doctors Manitoba says the province added 196 physicians between April 30, 2025, and April 30 of this year, based on the annual report from the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In 2025, Manitoba had a net increase of 164 physicians. That number was 133 in 2024.

“Another record-breaking increase in physicians is good news for patients,” said Dr. Alon Altman, president of Doctors Manitoba. “Manitoba is still climbing out of one of the most serious doctor shortages in the country, but sustained growth like this is helping us close the gap.”

But Doctors Manitoba says growth has been “uneven,” with western Manitoba losing eight physicians overall.

“We are moving in the right direction, but recruitment needs to be increasingly targeted to the specialties and communities where shortages remain most serious,” Altman said. “A province-wide increase doesn’t necessarily mean patients are finding it easier to get care in some communities or from some specialties.”

The group says retaining the physicians already practising in Manitoba is “just as important” as attracting new ones to the province.
