A major boost for affordable housing in Winnipeg, a trilateral partnership between the federal, provincial, and municipal governments will provide over $100 million to build 821 new homes, 90 per cent of which will be affordable, across Winnipeg and Swan River.
“Downtown Winnipeg is undergoing a transformation, and new housing is at the heart of that transformation, and today’s agreement is another important step,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
Gregor Robertson, the federal housing and infrastructure minister, said, “We need to get homes built, its about making sure that that includes rental housing, affordable rental housing, supportive and transitional housing, which is the big solution for the homelessness crisis that we have across Canada.”
Roughly, $104.7 million in federal funding will come through the Build Canada Homes Crown Corporation, which was created last year. The province will kick in $21.3 million in capital funding, and the city will add $22.1 million.
The partnership by all three levels of government is expected to unlock more than $400 million total in housing investments.
The announcement includes 9 projects, 8 in Winnipeg’s downtown, and one in Swan River.
“There’s two Market Lands. Mainstreet Project is doing some transitional housing, the Eritrean community is doing 55 units of transitional housing, we have veterans housing which is the Home for Heroes, and Swan Lake will also be receiving funds to do some housing out there,” said Bernadette Smith, the Manitoba minister of housing, addictions and homelessness.
Jim Ludlow, president of True North Real Estate Development, said over 200 housing units will also be coming to a new residential tower at Portage Place, 40 per cent of which will be affordable. The hope is to have shovels in the ground by March 2027, with the homes completed by fall 2029.
“Far too many people sleeping outside, sleeping rough, unsheltered, far too many people who can’t find a home they can afford, so the work is continuing at pace. We’re doubling down and focused on affordable housing as a country, and these partnerships are what deliver that,” said Robertson.
