Man charged in connection to string of robberies in June: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say a 29-year-old man has been charged in connection with a series of armed robberies.
WPS says between 12:30 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. on June 22, officers responded to several reports of robberies involving an armed suspect.
It is believed that around 12:30 p.m., a man went to a grocery store along Salter Street and allegedly made it known that he was going to rob the business.
Reports indicate that he then allegedly assaulted an employee with a baton and tried to assault another with an edged weapon. Employees and two security guards were able to hide in a room; however, the man reportedly barricaded the front door, and eventually fled some time later.
Not long later, the same man approached two men working in the area of Magnus Avenue and Salter Street and allegedly tried to rob them; however, both men were able to escape without injuries.
It is then believed that the man approached a 19-year-old man near the intersection of Magnus Avenue and Salter Street, where he allegedly assaulted him, and attempted to rob him. The 19-year-old was able to escape and contacted police.
Police searched the area and were able to find a man believed to be connected with all the incidents Salter Street near Magnus Avenue. When the man noticed police, he tried to flee on foot, but was taken into custody a short time later.
WPS notes that officers were able to find and seize two weapons.
Since then, 29-year-old Julius Joseph McKay has been charged with six counts of robbery, three counts of confinement, two counts of possession of a weapon, and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition.
