No cases of hantavirus in Manitoba since 2016: health officials say

The risk of contracting hantavirus in Manitoba is “low,” according to public-health officials in the province.

Manitoba Health says there have been no cases of hantavirus infection in the province since 2016.

That strain of hantavirus – known as Sin Nombre – is different from the outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship that captured worldwide attention last month. Passengers on the ship were exposed to the Andes strain of the virus, which is found in Argentina and Chile.

The Andes strain is the only type out of dozens of hantaviruses known to be capable of transmission between humans.

While hantaviruses originate in rodents, Manitoba Health says the Andes strain is not found in the province’s rodents.

“No cases or contacts associated with the Andes virus outbreak have been identified in the province,” the province wrote.
