The Winnipeg Blue Bombers officially kicked off training camp Sunday, marking the end of the long CFL off-season as players began preparing for the upcoming year.
Veterans and rookies hit the field with high energy, working through drills and team reps while competing for roster spots and building chemistry ahead of the season opener.
“Offseason, bringing in some great guys, some big-name guys, some guys that we think can help us get over that hump at the end of the season. It’s exciting,” said defensive end Willie Jefferson.
Returning players said months of off-season preparation have them eager to get back on the field.
“Every year new season you start to, you put so much work in offseason and you know the speed workouts, the lifts and you’re just like wanting to get back on the field and play football,” said running back Brady Oliveira.
Training camp also gives new additions to the roster a chance to settle into the team’s culture and expectations.
“Got some guys, got some freshmen. Gotta get a chance to mould them, show them what it’s like to be here in Winnipeg, play at Princess Auto Stadium and stuff like that,” Jefferson said. “We have fans in the stand. Just wanna show them a good time.”
New offensive tackle Jarell Broxton said he has already noticed the atmosphere surrounding the organization.
“Exciting. Great people around, energy is good and I could feel just the culture here and I’m just excited to get it started,” Broxton said.
With camp now underway, players and coaches are focused on building toward the new CFL season and what they hope will be another strong year for the Blue Bombers.
