1 dead, 2 injured after canoe capsizes north of Winnipeg

Manitoba RCMP say one person is dead, and two are injured after a canoe capsized last Friday.

Mounties responded to a report of the capsized canoe on Long Body Creek, near Bloodvein First Nation — around 285 km north of Winnipeg — around 2:11 p.m. on May 1.

Officers were taken by boat to a riverbank about five kilometres upstream from Rice River Road by a community volunteer, where they found a family of three.

One member of the family, a 47-year-old man, reportedly went into medical distress once removed from the water, and he died shortly after arrival at the local nursing station.

A 44-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were also taken to a hospital, suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
