Caregivers charged in death of 6-year-old Manitoba girl

A Manitoba woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a six-year-old girl who police say was assaulted in the fall of 2024.

The 39-year-old from The Pas has also been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and obstructing justice. Her 35-year-old partner was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.

Those charges are in connection with the Nov. 3, 2024, death of a six-year-old girl who was being cared for by the couple. Police say she died of a traumatic brain injury in hospital.

Authorities say a caregiver brought the girl to hospital with serious injuries and bruises Oct. 29, 2024. It was initially reported she had fallen from her bed. The girl was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg.

RCMP investigators believe the child’s injuries stemmed from an assault the day before she was brought to hospital.

Last week, Ashley and Joel Morach were arrested in The Pas. The allegations against them have not been tested in court.
