Thousands of Manitobans gathered for 12th annual All Nations Tribal Days for sports, entertainment and community spirit.
The four-day event that started on April 2, brought together communities across the province at Hockey for All centre in Winnipeg.
“When you bring people together, they get along. And if they get along, we all should be getting along,” said Michael Haines, hockey coordinator for the event.
James Spence, events coordinator, All Nations Tribal Days said, “It’s awesome to see our native people gather together and celebrate the event.
From music, arm wrestling and talent show, to poker tournaments, the weekend had something for everyone from Hockey for All Centre stretching all the way to Assiniboia Downs. Local vendors set up tables at Assiniboia Downs selling jewelry, clothes and other craft items.
For some, like Jason Klatt, a professional pool player, it’s a chance to come home and shoot some pool.
“There’s nothing like coming back home. Its just coming back to good energy. Good vibes seeing everybody that made who you are as a person,” Klatt said.
Hockey coordinator Haines said he wanted the weekend to be a time to forget about the outside world.
“Everybody has hard times on the reserve. When we bring them to the city, they enjoy entertainment and enjoy sports. That’s what I’m after. And I’m doing that for them. Not just for my community, for all nations,” Haines said.
Haines said he expected a record-breaking attendance this year after 12,000 people attended last year.
“It would be nice to have more tournaments or more sports-oriented events in Manitoba for all nations to come together and have fun,” said Haines.
