Man dies after alleged home break-in in Winnipeg, IIU investigating

Winnipeg police say a 34-year-old man is dead following a break-in at a home Wednesday morning.

WPS says officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter at a home along Burrin Avenue just after 8 a.m. on Apr. 1.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 34-year-old man unconscious.

It is believed that the man had unlawfully entered the home while the homeowner was present. However, it has not been released how the man became unconscious.

Officers handcuffed the man for safety and began to provide first aid until paramedics arrived on scene. The man was then taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The man’s death is considered to be an in-custody death, and Winnipeg police have notified Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

The IIU has begun an investigation into the matter.
