Winnipeg’s Transcona residents call for Councillor Wyatt’s resignation after sexual assault charge

Residents of Winnipeg’s Transcona neighbourhood called for City Councillor Russ Wyatt to step after the news earlier this week that he was charged with sexual assault.
Amid calls for him to step down, Wyatt attended city council meeting Thursday. He has so far refused to comment on the latest charges.
Madelene Field, who lives in the neighbourhood, said, “We need people to know that this is not safe, this is not good, this is not acceptable. You can’t be doing dumb stuff like this and still being in the public eye.”
Darryl Adam said Wyatt should step down while the legal process plays out.
“It’s kind of embarrassing. So you’ll hope he’ll do the right thing and just step down until it’s over whether he’s found guilty or innocent. Then we can make a decision”
Wyatt allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a man in late 2025. He was previously charged with sexual assault in July 2018, but the charges were stayed in court, and the issue of guilt or innocence was never determined.
As the latest scandal unfolds, some residents in the neighbourhood also reflected on what he’s done for their community.
“The issue is there he did a lot of good things in the last years and a lot of the roads where all fixed,” said Richie Labossiare, “He’s working very hard to keep Transcona viable.”
