North End double shooting: Winnipeg police identify 2nd victim as 16-year-old boy

A 32-year-old man and a teenager are dead following a shooting in Winnipeg's North End on March 12. Francisca Oppong has more on what we know about the victims.

Winnipeg police are providing more details about the two victims in last Thursday’s fatal shooting in North End.

CityNews previously identified that victims as Jason Baker, a 32-year-old father of six, and a teenager.

The Winnipeg Police is now saying the teen was a 16-year-old boy who lived in Sagkeeng First Nation.

Baker was a member of Hollow Water First Nation and was living in Winnipeg, according to police.

Both were critically injured in the shooting on Boyd Avenue near Charles Street Thursday around 5:30 p.m. They died in hospital.

While authorities have not provided many details about the shooting, Baker’s sister told CityNews he was fatally injured while saving his 17-year-old niece’s life by pushing her out of the way of the bullet.

No arrests have been made. The WPS homicide unit is investigating.

“The tactical units were outside already within five minutes, and that was that,” said neighbour Dakota Hendry. “They were so focused on helping the people that got shot that they didn’t notice the guy getting away in the car.”
