Front-line nurses help complete roadmap to strengthen patient care: province

The Government of Manitoba has released its first collaborative report on safe nurse staffing, developed with front-line nurses, the Manitoba Nurses Union, employers, and health system partners.

Premier Wab Kinew and Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara say the roadmap outlines evidence-based ways to improve nurse-to-patient ratios, strengthen care in high-pressure areas like ICUs and operating rooms, and support nurse retention while reducing burnout.

The report draws on research and feedback from more than 4,800 nurses and is meant to guide practical, frontline informed changes rather than top-down rules, the province says.

Officials say the province has added about 1,200 nurses since 2023 and plans to work toward implementing the recommendations to improve patient safety.
