Manitoba RCMP have charged a Calgary man for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the Stony Mountain Institution.
Mounties say they were notified by the prison that a drone had dropped off a package around 1:05 a.m. on Feb. 8.
Following this, Mounties reportedly noticed a vehicle in the area turning west on Road 72N from Highway 7 in the RM of Rockwood, and a traffic stop was conducted.
During the stop, officers allegedly noticed a black hard case labeled with the name of a drone manufacturer within the vehicle, which led to two people who were within the vehicle being taken into custody.
While taking both into custody, police noticed a drone at the feet of the man, who was the passenger. The drone allegedly had a large package attached to it, with a trigger release mechanism.
RCMP note that the package that was allegedly attached to the drone contained balloons that were filled with drugs, including 355 grams of methamphetamine, 63 grams of cocaine, 60 grams of tobacco, and 59 grams of cannabis concentrate.
Police say the 34-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was released without charges, but the passenger, 28-year-old David Mymin from Calgary, was charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
