Twenty-four community centres across Winnipeg are set to receive funding for renovations through the City’s Community Centre Renovation Grant Program.
Mayor Scott Gillingham was on skates at Tyndall Park Community Centre on Tuesday to highlight how much people rely on these facilities and how critical repairs and safety improvements are much-needed upgrades.
The almost $2 million in funding will go towards upgrades to ensure that all facilities are safe for years to come.
“There’s no shortage of demand for these funds. I remember years ago, initially for council, we had this fund set at $2 million annually for a certain number of years,” said Gillingham. And then the plan was to go back to $1 million, and the community centers said, you know, please don’t. And so we, as a council, decided to keep that at a $2 million annual investment level because the need is there.”
Since the program’s inception in 2012, the City has invested over $20 million towards community club renovations across Winnipeg.
“Community centres are the backbone of our neighbourhoods — they are where kids play, families gather, seniors stay active, and communities connect,” said Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services.
“Through the Community Centre Renovation Grant Program, the City is making targeted, practical investments to ensure these facilities remain safe, accessible, and functional for the volunteers and boards who work tirelessly to keep them running. Supporting these upgrades is about protecting community assets and strengthening the social fabric of Winnipeg, today and for years to come.”
