Winnipeg police arrest man after taxi robbery

Winnipeg police (WPS) arrested a 42-year-old man in connection with a taxi robbery in Rosyln on Thursday.

WPS say they responded to a 911 call reporting the theft of a taxi in the 1-99 block of Nassau Street.

“The suspect stole the driver’s personal property, destroyed the taxi camera, and continued the assault while making additional threats before the victim was able to exit the vehicle,” WPS said in a press release, Saturday.

Police say the suspect then drove the taxi away. The taxi driver didn’t require medical attention.

WPS say they arrested Chief Silas Keeper while he was in the taxi near the intersection of River Avenue and Norquay Street.

“The suspect was found in the driver’s seat and was uncooperative during his arrest. He also displayed signs of impairment, was in possession of alcohol, and refused to provide a breath sample,” police said.

Keeper also allegedly provided a different name during the arrest and was in possession of another person’s identification.

Keeper was taken into custody and charged with several charges including robbery, impaired driving, failure or refusal to comply with demand, possession of an identity document, identity fraud, uttering threats.

The suspect was detained in custody. The allegations have yet to be proven in court.
