Temperatures in Winnipeg are hitting the minus-40s with the wind chill, but that’s not stopping Winnipeggers from getting outside.
“All year round, all year-round, doesn’t matter the temperature, you’ll always find me in shorts. Even my neighbours are like ‘why are you out in shorts?’” says Deagan Blais.
“It’s just what I do, it’s how I’ve always been ever since I was a kid…Never had a jacket zipped up nothing,” Blais adds.
Local running legend Junel Malapad is no stranger to dressing for outdoor activities and jokes, “This is what I’m wearing blaw blaw blaw.”
It’s not local legends, even those who are not used to this type of cold are venturing out in the cold.
Sanj Chandran chose to visit Winnipeg for a vacation and so far, Chandran and his daughter have no regrets.
“Obviously we enjoy the snow. She loves the snow, she loves skating. She saw it on the TV; she’s always wanted to do that. Just took her here trying to teach, even while I’m learning as well,” says Chandran.
While people brave extreme cold, meteorologists warn of frost bite that could happen in minutes and advise caution.
The cold snap is expected to continue this weekend with lows dropping to as minus-38 C.
