Winnipeggers kicked off the new year skating at the Nestaweya river trail Thursday.
The river trail at The Forks marked the start of 2026 with the opening of the skating trail, which has become a destination for many in Winnipeg.
“A lot of people made it their annual tradition to come down during the holidays and check it out and the fact that we can get it on New Year’s Day is a great way to start 2026,” said Blair Malazdrewich, communications and marketing manager of The Forks.
“Once the trails are open, I definitely try and make the time to come out to skate on the trail,” said James Gomez who has come to the trail for several years in a row.
“It’s nice to see everyone come out, especially today,” said Gomez. “It’s not too cold. Perfect day to come out for a skate.”
Officials say the ribbon cutting attracted over 50 skaters eager to get on the ice.
“Beautiful! It feels great being out in the fresh air,” said Brianna Plett, who was among the first skaters of 2026 at The Forks.
“Definitely a few people out on the trail. And it’s great to just chat with people in the neighbourhood and I love being out here,” Plett said.
As in most places, skating at the Nestaweya river trail comes with risk. But crews at the forks check the ice thickness on a daily basis and update ice conditions and trail availability on their website.
