Winnipeg Ringette League hosts 15th annual all-star game

Over 150 top players from U19 athletes to rising young stars of the Winnipeg Ringette League (WRL) took part in the 15th annual all-star game Saturday at the Seven Oaks arena.

“It represents the best of the best that we have to offer. Ringette truly is a game for the ages. It’s a lifelong sport. We have players that are playing that are into their 80s that are still playing. It’s truly a team sport,” said Al Gowriluk, WRL spokesperson.

Organizers say, ringette is more then a team sport, it’s connection, bonds and a community that comes together both on and off the ice and it’s been this way for 15 years now.

“Fifteen — I guess a nice round number, it’s goes to show the commitment we have. A group of 34 volunteers are required to put an event like this together and to get 34 volunteers on a weekend for the entire day is just pure testament and how close knit the ringette at community truly is,” Gowriluk said.

The Seven Oaks arena was filled with loud cheers, packed stands as Winnipeggers came to celebrate the sport.

For many of these players, the event marks a new milestone.

One player said, “This is my first year of being selected so i’m very excited and happy that i made it.”

“I’m really happy I got selected to be a part of this and with my friends,” said another.

Athletes say that the audience is just as important as those who are on the ice.

“I hope it was fun watching us and all the other players work out hardest out here and we hoped to inspire younger kids to join ringette,” said another.
