A confrontation outside a Portage la Prairie school resulted in a 15-year-old student being stabbed and two other teenagers taken into custody, according to Manitoba RCMP.
Police say the victim, a 15-year-old boy, became involved in a dispute with two other boys in the school’s parking lot. After the attack, he managed to reach a staff member who administered first aid and contacted emergency responders. The boy was transported to hospital, and RCMP report that he is expected to recover fully.
Officers, aided by police dogs, conducted a search of the surrounding area. They eventually located the two suspects at a residence in Portage la Prairie, where both were arrested without resistance.
As a precaution, the school division briefly placed local schools under a hold-and-secure order. This measure was lifted once the suspects had been apprehended.
According to police, the two accused, both 14 years old, are facing several charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and disguise with intent. One of the teens is also charged with breaching a release order.
None of the charges have yet been proven in court, and the identities of the youths cannot be released due to their ages. Police say both teenagers remain in custody ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Friday morning.
The school division added that its crisis response team and counsellors were on-site Friday to offer support to students and staff.
