Winnipeg charities call for support on Giving Tuesday as demand rises

Agape Table and Dress for Success are offering a helping hand for those in need in Winnipeg as part of the ongoing Giving Tuesday effort. Francisca Oppong reports.

Winnipeg organizations marked Giving Tuesday by calling for community support as demand for services rises and temperatures continue to fall.

Giving Tuesday, a global movement promoting generosity and community kindness, encourages people to help neighbours or strangers through donations, volunteerism or simple acts of support. Local groups say the need is especially pressing during the winter months.

Dress for Success Winnipeg, which provides professional clothing and supports for women entering the workforce, says Giving Tuesday helps draw attention to the basics many clients rely on.

“For Giving Tuesday we want to promote these hygiene kits that we try to give to all of our clients so that’s specifically what we do on giving Tuesday,” said Eston Ferraton, program manager at Dress for Success Winnipeg.

Agape Table, which has served Winnipeggers facing food insecurity for more than 45 years, says up to 1,000 people rely on them daily. The organization hopes the spirit of Giving Tuesday motivates people to support its programs.

“With today being Giving Tuesday, you know, its so important that our guest are looked after and having a organization like agape table, its an excellent ? to kind of bridge that gap for a lot of people in Winnipeg that are in need,” said Aaron Scarff, volunteer coordinator at Agape Table. “So today we served 780 meals and we are on to our food bank program today so every Tuesday and Thursday we also have a food bank program, that’s what you see happening behind me today.”

Organizations say that although Giving Tuesday lasts only one day, they hope it inspires ongoing community generosity, particularly as winter increases pressure on vulnerable people.

“We do struggle with a few things so occasionally we’ll do a call out for things, we always struggle with winter gear, coats, pants, boots and we also struggle with hygiene products, it’s a little bit difficult and its also kind of like, you know you might not think about donating toothbrushes or toothpaste to a organization but its things that these women need to be able to succeed,” Ferraton said.
