Winnipeg fire crews 3 evening, overnight blazes

It was another busy night for Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services, which had to respond to three different fires across the city.

Bannatyne Avenue fire

The first fire happened just before 8 p.m. on Nov. 27. Fire crews responded to a vacant house fire along Bannatyne Avenue.

Crews were reportedly driving in the area when they noticed smoke and flames coming from the two-storey residence.

Due to the conditions of the fire, crews began a defensive battle using handlines and an aerial ladder, before bringing the fire under control at 11:42 p.m.

Neighbouring homes were reportedly evacuated as a precaution, and the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team provided support for the displaced residents.

No injuries were reported, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Fire officials also note that the residence was previously damaged in a fire in July.

“Residents should use caution in the area because water from firefighting has frozen and created slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews are monitoring the area and applying sand and de-icing agents to roads and sidewalks as needed to improve traction,” said WFPS in a statement.

Coulter Avenue fire

Just after midnight, fire crews responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey commercial/industrial building along Coulter Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene, they could see smoke and flames coming from the building and began to fight the blaze from inside the building, before declaring it under control at 1 a.m.

A search of the building was conducted and no occupants were found; additionally, no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Kennedy Street fire

Lastly, fire crews responded to a monitored fire alarm in a seven-storey high-rise apartment building along Kennedy Street.

Dispatchers initially declared a second alarm because of the potential scale of the incident and dispatched additional units to the scene.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they could see smoke in the building, and were able to locate the fire. The fire was declared under control at 3:43 a.m.

Residents were temporarily evacuated from the building and have since been able to return to their suites.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
