Winnipeg police issue warning regarding release of high-risk sex offender

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit (MIHRSOU) says a convicted sex offender is being released from prison on Wednesday.

The warning from the joint WPS and RCMP task force comes as they believe Desmond Jared Shane Catcheway is a high risk to re‑offend in a sexual and/or sexually violent manner against women.

Police say he has a history of sexual and violent offences and has a history of failing to comply with court-ordered conditions.

He was in prison for four years and six months after being convicted for transmitting, making available, distributing or selling sexually explicit material to a person under 16 years; luring a person under 16 years of age by means of telecommunication; indecent exposure to a person under 16 years of age; failure to comply with order; and failure to comply with order or obligation.

Catcheway is 39 years old, weighing around 109 kg (240 lbs.), and is 178 cm tall (five-foot-10). He has black hair and brown eyes. Additionally, he has several tattoos, including a Japanese dragon on his right chest; a devil and a Japanese skull on his left forearm; a devil, Catcheway, and a Japanese skull on his right forearm; Baby Emily on the back of his neck; bones, skull, flower, and a snake on his right upper arm; and bones and a skull on his right hand. He also has scars on his left wrist and right elbow.

Police say Catcheway is expected to live in Winnipeg, noting this information is only to warn the public and saying that no vigilante action should be taken against him.

Anyone who may have any information regarding Catcheway is asked to speak directly to a police officer, contact the MIHRSOU at 431-489-8056, Winnipeg police at 204-986-2222, your local RCMP Detachment, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
