Police in Manitoba say the chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is accused of sexually assaulting a teenager in 1984 – when the accused was 24 years old.
Virden RCMP say Chief Vincent Tacan, 65, was arrested and charged with sexual assault on Wednesday — 41 years after the alleged historical sexual assault is said to have taken place in a western Manitoba community.
A woman reported to Mounties on May 5 of this year that she was allegedly assaulted by Tacan when she was under the age of 16.
The Manitoba RCMP says it is not releasing the name of the victim nor where the alleged assault took place “in order to protect her identity.”
Authorities say they conducted an “extensive investigation” into the historical sexual assault allegation against Tacan, which has not been tested in court. Virden RCMP are continuing to investigate.
Tacan is currently up for re-election as chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, with voters heading to the polls on Thursday.
