The Grey Cup is here, and even without the Bombers in the big game on Sunday, fans are still showing up to celebrate the game and get a glimpse of the trophy.

“The role is really cool. I’m just a fan with a really cool job, and what I get to do is I get to take care of 4049 names that are truly etched into history, and they are really chapters in this great history book,” said Jeff McWhinney, who is responsible for the Grey Cup’s security.

One of the people out to see the trophy on Monday was Anna MacNeil. Her husband, Brett MacNeil, took part in three of the CFL championships.

“He was the heart and soul of the team in the 90s,” MacNeil explained.

She’s looking forward to the celebrations, which will take place over the next seven days across the city.

“It’s very exciting and with the cup coming back, our two daughters, Victoria and Courtney. All four of us are going, it’s going to be a family event, and it’s going to be exciting. It brings a lot of thrill back to the city,” said MacNeil.

Long-time CFL fan Dennis Meech says he’s been glued to the gridiron for decades and can’t wait to see what’s in store as Winnipeg hosts the 112th Grey Cup.

“When I was a boy growing up, the CFL, the Bombers were everything. With Butt Grant, that whole era,” said Meech.

Kickoff for Sunday’s game is set for 5 p.m.
