Woman accused of assaulting Winnipeg police officer on transit bus

A 25-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly violently assaulting a Winnipeg police officer aboard a transit bus on Tuesday.

Officials say at around 9:27 p.m., the woman boarded a bus in the area of Garry Street and Portage Avenue and attempted to ride without paying a fare.

The woman allegedly tried to punch an officer in the face once they confronted her about the unpaid ticket. She was later taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is facing charges of assault and resisting a peace officer. She was released on an undertaking.

The officer was riding the bus as part of the Winnipeg Transit Violent Crime Intervention Strategy, a collaborative effort with the City of Winnipeg, aimed at addressing violent and disruptive behaviour and enhancing safety on Winnipeg transit.
