Helicopter deployed after domestic dispute sparks police chase in Winnipeg

A 45-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night following a domestic dispute that turned into a wild police chase in the East Elmwood neighbourhood.

Officers were called to a parking lot on Regent Avenue at approximately 9:15 p.m. and witnessed the disturbance unfold. When they intervened, the suspect jumped in a pickup truck which was previously reported stolen and drove off before his car could be boxed in.

Authorities say the man proceeded to drive the vehicle towards an officer who was exiting his police cruiser. The officer jumped out of the way before he could be hit and the suspect fled from the parking lot at a high rate of speed, according to police. That’s when officers initiated a police chase which required aerial support from a helicopter.

“Members of Air1 took over the pursuit and maintained visual containment of the vehicle as the man drove recklessly through East Elmwood onto sidewalks and green spaces,” police wrote in a statement shared on Sunday. “Air1 provided direction to ground units who successfully deployed a stop stick, eventually disabling the vehicle.”

Investigators say the man abandoned the vehicle once it became inoperable and began running through the area of Nottingham Avenue and Molson Street by foot.

“Air1 followed him to a residential yard in the 400 block of Kent Road where he attempted to break into a garage, causing approximately $1,000 in damage,” authorities added. “Officers deployed a Conductive Energy Weapon (Taser) to arrest the uncooperative, non-compliant man. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.”

The 45-year-old man was arrested and charged with eight offences listed below:

  • Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Break Enter & Commit – Place
  • Utter Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

Police have not named the suspect in order protect the identity of the other parties involved but say the suspect remains in custody.
